Why Are Breast Implants Dangerous?
Breast implants are medical devices made of saline or silicone that the FDA has approved for cosmetic reasons, increasing breast size, and for reconstruction after breast cancer surgery or trauma. While the risks of having these devices implanted have existed since they were first developed in the 1960s, breast implants were not regulated by the FDA until 1976. The following year, the first lawsuit against a breast implant manufacturer, Dow Corning, was won by a plaintiff who alleged that the implant had ruptured, causing pain and suffering and the need for subsequent surgery.
Most recently, the FDA has asked Allergan to recall its Natrelle BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders because of their link to a form of cancer called anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL). This cancer affects the immune system and can spread throughout the body. Symptoms of the disease, which can occur months or years after the insertion of the implant, include:
- Swelling or pain in the area of the implant or in the lymph nodes of the armpit or neck
- Appetite loss, fatigue, fevers and night sweats
- Collection of fluid around the implant, discoverable upon medical examination
- A lump under the skin of the breast caused by scar tissue
If ALCL is discovered through an analysis of enlarged lymph nodes, it will require removal of the implant, possibly followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. If not detected early enough and successfully treated, it can lead to death. If you are a woman with a breast implant who has subsequently been diagnosed with ALCL, we are fully prepared to seek damages for current and future medical expenses, lost wages and other losses associated with the harm caused by this defective product.
